STATEMENT BY THE MAYOR

Re: The Palisade Avenue Redevelopment Study

Jersey City
Some residents of Palisades Avenue have raised concerns about development plans. I want to assure them that the City is not interested in razing blocks of homes on Palisade Avenue in the name of "redevelopment." Nor is the City interested in selling, leasing or developing Fisk-Riverview Park.

I agree with them that their neighborhood would benefit from the rehabilitation and restoration of existing buildings, especially those which are presently vacant. In fact, the reason why the City is currently studying how best to revitalize the neighborhood is because community leaders asked us to do so.

The redevelopment planning process is really about learning and doing what the community wants.

We don't want to take actions without having a plan, and we want our plan to mirror what the community wants. Input from the community will guide our revitalization efforts. What the people want done we will do. What the people do not want done, we will not do. Both the Planning Board and the City Council will conduct public hearings before voting on any proposal so that everyone has input into the process.

I understand that there are numerous rumors swirling around about the type of zoning changes that the City is likely to recommend for Palisade Avenue. I suspect the individuals who are spreading these rumors are doing so to further their own personal interests. Therefore, I would advise residents to ignore them.

I am confident that, if residents give our Planning staff a chance, they will be pleased with the results.
